When You Need to Replace Your Locks

So the most obvious time to replace your locks is when they aren’t working, right? This is true, however, there are plenty of reasons to replace your locks. Your defense begins with your locks.

Here are some other reasons and times when it would be a good idea to change your locks:

  • Locks are old and worn
Whenever you move into a new home, there is a good chance that the locks have been there since the house was built. You’ll need to look at the locks to make this determination. If they look old and dated, you should know that these types of locks are very problematic. Over time they lose their effectiveness. While we already encourage people who are moving into new homes or older homes to change all the locks, if they are old and worn, this is an even bigger reason to do so.
  • Lost/Stolen keys
You don’t know who has your keys and you can’t really assume that you just lost them. However, if you did lose them, you don’t know who picked them up or where you lost them. What if they fell out in your driveway and someone walking by noticed them. They could use them anytime. It is best to have all of the locks of your home replace to ensure that no one is able to gain access inside. Instead, of trying to find the keys, the first thing we would suggest that you do is contact a locksmith to change the locks. While you are looking for them, someone could be breaking in.
  • New Tenants
If you are a landlord, you already know that it is your responsibility to change the locks or have them rekeyed when a new tenant moves in. If you are not doing this, you could be held liable if something were to happen to a tenant. This would be considered negligence on your part and could result in your losing your job or being sued. If you don’t want this eventuality, make sure you change the locks when a new tenant moves in and avoid the possibility of anyone breaking into their place because you failed to do so.
  • Move Outs
If you have a room-mate that is moving out, consider changing the locks. This doesn’t mean that you don’t trust them, it simply means that you are being safe. You may not know it but they may have given a key to someone without your knowing about it. That person may still have the key and might just decide to use it when they feel like it. Don’t take unnecessary chances, change the lock and veer on the side of caution.
  • Break-ins
Common sense would undoubtedly tell you that this is the best time to have your locks change. However, not everyone uses common sense. They assume that since it already happened that it probably won’t happen again. This is not always the case. In most cases, someone will break in again because they know they can. If you change the locks, they will move on to someone else’s place. Don’t make yourself an easy target CHANGE YOUR LOCKS! Besides, the next time they show up, you might just happen to be home. We would hate for you to encounter a burglar in your home.

We don’t want anyone to experience a home invasion, if they can help it. We suggest that you consider adding keyless locks to your home. This only requires a keypad and a code. These types of locks are not easily compromised. It would take a lot for a burglar to get through the door of your house if you had this type of lock. The keyless lock enables several people in your home to use it. This means you can program as many codes as needed to allow access into your home. We caution you to only create a code that your family members will know. The danger is in giving out your code to people who are doing contracted work and forgetting to change it once the work is completed. This is a word of caution in this case.

So you might say that not every burglary occurs through a door. You’re correct! However, in our experience, we don’t see too many thieves dragging ladders around with them trying to climb through windows. However, if you have windows that are ground level, these windows will definitely require the right locks to avoid entry. You can’t be too safe. If somehow someone broke into your home and you can’t figure out their entry point, have every singe lock in your home changed! This is not over-reacting; it is being safe. There is nothing wrong with over-reacting in terms of making sure you and your family are safe. A locksmith can have your locks changed in no time. There is no drilling need in order to quickly and correctly change your home locks.

Homeowners should be mindful of certain occurances in the neighborhood and act accordingly. Change your locks if you suspect someone has been inside your home. Someone could have come inside simply to case it out to see what you have inside that would be of interest to them. They might later return to collect the things they saw that were of interest to them. Don’t take chances. If you have a feeling, let it lead you to take action. Changing your locks is far less expensive than dealing with a burglary and losing valuables things you’ve worked so hard to acquire.
